Blockchain vs. Cryptocurrency: What’s the Difference? That is the question I have been asking. I have heard the words blockchain, Bitcoin, and cryptocurrency many times, but I never completely understood how they worked together. So, I decided to do some research. Here is what I found out.
What Is Blockchain?
Blockchain is a type of digital record-keeping technology. Information is stored in groups called blocks, and those blocks are connected to create a chain of information.
Instead of all the information being stored in one central location, copies of a blockchain can be maintained across multiple computers on a network. Depending on the type of blockchain, participants in the network help verify and record transactions.
When a block of information is added to the blockchain, cryptographic methods help connect it to the blocks that came before it. This helps create a history of transactions that can be very difficult to alter without detection.
That helped me understand where the name comes from: blocks of information connected together in a chain.
What Is Cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that can operate using blockchain technology. Bitcoin is one of the best-known examples.
Bitcoin was designed to allow people to transfer value electronically without requiring a bank to process every transaction. Other cryptocurrencies have since been created for many different purposes.
This was one of the biggest things that helped me understand the difference between blockchain and cryptocurrency.
Blockchain is the technology. Cryptocurrency is one way that technology can be used.
Key Features of Blockchain Technology
Distributed Ledger Technology
A distributed ledger allows copies of transaction records to be maintained across multiple participants or computers on a network rather than relying on only one central database.
This can allow participants to work from a shared transaction history.
Records That Are Difficult to Change
One important feature of many blockchains is that previously recorded information is designed to be difficult to alter.
If information needs to be corrected, a new transaction or entry may be required rather than simply erasing the original record. This can provide a visible history of activity.
Blocks
Blockchain gets its name from the way information is organized.
Transactions or other data can be grouped into blocks. Each block can contain information about the transactions and a cryptographic value that helps connect it to another block.
As additional blocks are added, they create a chronological chain of information.
What Are Some Advantages of Blockchain?
Transparency and Record Keeping
Depending on the blockchain, participants may be able to view or verify transaction information. Having a shared record can make it easier to trace activity and confirm that transactions occurred.
However, not every blockchain works the same way. Some are public, while others restrict who can participate or view certain information.
Records Protected by Cryptography
Blockchain technology uses cryptographic techniques to help protect and verify information.
Once information has been confirmed and added to many blockchains, changing that history can be difficult. This is one reason blockchain technology has attracted interest for applications that require reliable record-keeping.
Decentralization
Some blockchains operate across many computers instead of depending on one central computer or organization.
This can reduce reliance on a single point of control or failure. However, blockchain technology is not immune to security risks. Cryptocurrency exchanges, wallets, passwords, private keys, scams, and other systems connected to blockchain technology can still be vulnerable.
Blockchain vs. Cryptocurrency: What I Learned
After reading about blockchain vs. cryptocurrency, I finally have a better understanding of how the two fit together.
The biggest thing I learned is that blockchain and cryptocurrency are not the same thing.
Blockchain is the technology that can be used to record and verify information. Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that can use blockchain technology to record transactions.
I also learned that blockchain has uses beyond cryptocurrency. The technology can potentially be used for different types of record-keeping, tracking, payments, and other applications.
No one knows exactly what role blockchain and cryptocurrency will play in our future. However, both technologies continue to develop, and learning the basics now can make them a little less confusing.
I hope what I learned helps you better understand blockchain vs. cryptocurrency too. If these terms have confused you as they confused me, remember the simplest explanation I found:
