What I Learned When My Computer Suddenly Stopped Working

What I Learned When My Computer Suddenly Stopped Working began on a morning when I had plenty of work to do. You sit down at your desk, ready to get started, press the button on your computer and it won’t start. Well, that happened to me, and this is my story.

As you know, I work from home on my computer. I use it for almost everything. My personal pictures, videos, bills, programs, work documents, and so much more are stored on my computer.

The day before, my computer suddenly stopped working; everything was running great. I finished my work for the day, logged off, and didn’t think anything else about it.

I had no idea what was waiting for me the next morning.

I had a couple of appointments scheduled with new students that day. I had my morning coffee and sat down at my desk to get everything ready for my appointments.

My computer wouldn’t start.

Instead, I kept getting a strange message I had never seen before:

“Boot Device Not Found. Hard Disk 3F0.”

I sat there reading the message, but at first it wasn’t registering what it meant. I did a hard reboot, thinking maybe the computer simply hadn’t loaded correctly.

The same message appeared again.

This couldn’t be right. The computer had worked perfectly the day before!

When my computer suddenly stopped working, my first thought was to figure out whether there was something simple I could do to get it running again.

I grabbed my cell phone, opened the ChatGPT app, and asked what the message meant. I learned that the computer wasn’t detecting the drive it needed to start Windows.

We started troubleshooting.

I spent about an hour and a half going through different suggestions, including running diagnostics and checking the connections inside the computer. Unfortunately, nothing we tried got the computer running again.

At that point, I knew I needed someone to look at it.

I made an appointment with Best Buy’s Geek Squad for the following day. The only location that could get me in quickly was about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from my house.

I know that is a long way to travel because of a computer, but what was I supposed to do? I work from home. When my computer suddenly stopped working, it also meant that much of my work came to a stop.

When I arrived, I was told that repairing the computer could cost more than replacing it, and they wouldn’t be able to fix it that day.

I didn’t want to leave the computer there and then make another two-and-a-half-hour trip to pick it up later.

It was time for Plan B.

Luckily, I had gotten paid that day and had enough money to purchase a new computer.

Was a new computer in my budget?

Absolutely not.

But sometimes things happen that you simply aren’t prepared for.

I started looking at the computers in the store, and WOW! I couldn’t believe the prices of some of them.

I explained to the salesperson what had happened, what I used my computer for, and what I needed. They recommended a computer that wasn’t exactly what I had originally wanted, but it had what I needed and was within my price range.

So, home it came with me.

When I got home, I spent about three hours setting up the new computer and getting everything back the way I wanted it.

That experience made me very thankful that I use a password manager. I have numerous programs and online accounts that require passwords. Trying to remember every one of those passwords would have made an already stressful day even worse.

Eventually, I had everything set up and could get back to work.

The good news is that my new computer works great, and I am very happy with the purchase I made.

The biggest lesson I learned when my computer suddenly stopped working was how important backups are.

If you have pictures, videos, documents, business records, or other files that you don’t want to lose, don’t keep the only copy on your computer.

An external drive can be one way to keep an additional copy of important files. Cloud storage is another option. Whichever method you choose, make sure the files that matter to you are actually included in your backups, and occasionally check that you can access them.

I was fortunate. The only things I lost during the change to my new computer were some pictures I had saved.

It could have been much worse.

Having my computer suddenly stop working taught me that backing up important files is something I need to do before there is a problem, not afterward.

We depend on computers for so much that it is easy to forget they can fail without warning. Mine worked perfectly one day and wouldn’t boot the next morning.

If I learned anything from this experience, it is to prepare before something goes wrong.

Back up the files you don’t want to lose. Keep track of your passwords securely. Know which programs you would need to reinstall. And don’t assume that because your computer is working perfectly today, it will work perfectly tomorrow.

I certainly didn’t expect my computer to suddenly stop working.

But after going through it once, I will be much better prepared if it ever happens again.
