Discover Fine Wines and the Art of Wine Pairing

Discovering fine wines can be an enjoyable experience, especially when you begin learning about different varieties, flavors, and food pairings. You don’t have to be a wine expert to appreciate a good bottle of wine. A little knowledge can help you understand what you enjoy and how different wines complement different foods.

Wine is produced in a wide variety of styles, regions, and price ranges. Rather than simply choosing a bottle based on the label or price, learning about wine can help you make selections based on your own tastes and the foods you plan to serve.

If you enjoy wine or would like to learn more about it, this page is a great place to start.

Sadly, most people do not know that the Wines they buy in Grocery Stores, Liquor Stores, or their local Convenience Store are not what they are. If you drink wine, you must know what Fine Wines are about. What is happening with the Grocery Store wines people drink without knowing what is in them?

Have you ever wondered why one wine tastes wonderful with a particular meal while another doesn’t seem to complement it quite as well?

That’s part of the fun of learning about wine pairing.

Different wines have their own aromas, flavors, acidity, sweetness, and body. The foods you serve alongside them can change how you experience those characteristics. Learning some basic pairing principles can make choosing a bottle for dinner, a celebration, or a relaxing evening much easier.

Watch the video below to learn more about fine wines and the experience of discovering different varieties.

Fine wine isn’t only about purchasing an expensive bottle. Part of the experience is discovering the characteristics of different wines and learning which ones you enjoy.

Through the Wine of the Month Club, members can explore different wine selections without having to choose every bottle themselves. It’s also an opportunity to try varieties you may not normally select when shopping on your own.

As you taste different wines, pay attention to what you like. Do you prefer something light and refreshing? Sweet or dry? Fruity? Rich and full-bodied?

There isn’t one correct answer. Your personal preference is an important part of discovering wine.

Pairing wine with food can make both more interesting.

One simple approach is to begin with lighter wines and foods before moving toward richer flavors. A lighter white wine, for example, may complement cheeses, fruit, vegetables, seafood, or lighter dishes, while a fuller-bodied red may work well with richer cheeses, meats, and heartier meals.

You don’t need an elaborate dinner to experiment with wine pairing. One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get started is with a charcuterie board.

A charcuterie board can be as simple or elaborate as you want. The idea is to provide several different tastes and textures so you can experiment with how each one tastes alongside different wines.

Consider including a variety of:

wines
  • Cheeses
  • Nuts
  • Dried fruits
  • Bread and crackers
  • Jams or jellies
  • Chocolates
  • Savory meats
  • Honey
  • Fresh berries
  • Dill or sweet pickles
  • Fresh vegetables

There are no strict rules for creating your board. Choose foods that you and your guests enjoy and include several different flavors: sweet, salty, savory, creamy, and crunchy.

Then comes the fun part: taste a food by itself, take a sip of wine, and notice what happens when you enjoy the two together.

You may be surprised by which combinations become your favorites.

When tasting several wines, you may want to begin with lighter selections before moving to fuller-bodied varieties.

Some wines you may encounter through the featured selections include:

  • Tanya Ricord Moscato
  • Tanya Ricord Pinot Grigio
  • More Than Muse Sauvignon Blanc
  • More Than Muse Chenin Blanc
  • More Than Muse Chardonnay
  • Nile Eddy Pinot Grigio
  • Donna Walker Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Linda Horn Cabernet Franc
  • Ricord Merlot

You don’t have to taste all of them at once. Exploring wine is something you can enjoy over time.

Try different varieties, take note of the foods you paired with them, and remember the combinations you especially enjoyed.

If you’re planning an evening for two or entertaining a few guests, you can also create individual tasting plates instead of one large charcuterie board.

Place small portions of cheese, fruit, crackers, chocolate, meats, or other foods on each person’s plate. Everyone can then try the same foods with different wines and compare what they notice.

This can turn an ordinary evening into something a little different without requiring an elaborate meal.

For me, “Wine Magic” isn’t simply about the bottle of wine.

It’s the entire experience.

It’s enjoying good food, discovering new flavors, learning something new, and spending time with your spouse, significant other, family, or friends.

Maybe it’s a romantic evening for two. Maybe it’s an afternoon with friends around a charcuterie board. Or perhaps it’s a special dinner with family.

Those are the moments that can make the experience memorable.

Learning about wine doesn’t have to be complicated. The more varieties you experience, the easier it becomes to recognize what you enjoy and which foods you like to pair with them.

Wine education can cover topics such as:

  • Differences between red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines
  • Sweet versus dry wines
  • Light-bodied versus full-bodied wines
  • How temperature affects the tasting experience
  • Choosing foods that complement different wine varieties
  • Serving and storing wine
  • Discovering your own personal preferences

The goal isn’t to become a wine expert overnight. It’s simply to learn enough to make your own wine experiences more enjoyable.

For those who want to continue learning, Wine Education Hour offers an opportunity to explore wine and food pairings and discover something new.
